Author Business Plans Made Easy

There is a lot that goes into writing and releasing a book. Whether self-publish or sign with a traditional publishing house you are always going to be responsible for the business plan of your book. What?! Your book needs a business plan?  Yep.

Ryan Petty talks about this today.  Plus he shared a really cool exercise he calls Red Light, Green Light, Yellow Light.  He explains this exercise in depth in his book, Author Business Plans Made Easy. (*Please note that he is relaunching his book and this is the brand new title…as of today 4/24/15 it is actually listed as Write-Livelihood.)

What are the first two steps that Ryan says you need to put into place when thinking about your business plan?

  1. Set aside time for the business aspect of your book. How much time will you write? How much time will you spend on marketing? And, much more.
  2. Inventory all of YOUR assets. These go far beyond financial assets. List all of your books, your ideas, your skills and abilities and more.

Check out Ryan’s book and find out how to create your author business plan easily.

As soon as we have a copy of the new cover and new link, we will update and share them with you 🙂

Ryan Petty is a former small press publisher (Cold Mountain Press, Austin, Texas, 1973-1981) who stepped away from his literary passions to raise a family and pursue a career in economic development. Recently retired, he has returned to the Brave New World of independent writing, publishing and entrepreneurship.

His first new title, Author Business Plans Made Easy, grew from his personal quest to map the road to financial independence and artistic control in a way that uniquely fit him – just as yours should fit you.

The Author Hub Helps You Get Noticed

Getting published by a publishing house isn’t the easiest thing to do. It can be time consuming and even expensive. But, there is good news! Obi Ochu talked today with us about his new venture, The Author Hub.

So many authors want to be published, but they struggle whether it is they don’t know where to start or that they get rejection after rejection.  Obi says that The Author Hub is for authors like LinkedIn is for professionals.

It only takes three steps:

  • Create – write your book.
  • Upload – Share it via The Author Hub with the industry.
  • Reward – Finally get noticed.

One of the greatest parts about this wonderful new resource is that they don’t just accept anyone. Books must be high quality and vetted.

The Hooker’s Daughter

At the tender age of six, Dale Stanten, was opening the front door for her mother’s johns. She and her sister were often used by “props” by her mother such as times her mother would take them to the movies, but instead of actually going to the movies with them Dale’s mother would leave the girls at the movie and go somewhere else with her boyfriend. Then the girls would be expected to lie to their father about where their mom really was.

Have you already judged Dale’s mom? Well, guess what. Dale says that her mom taught her to be kind to others and not shame them! She must have understood what it felt like to be shamed by others. Not only was Dale’s mom a prostitute, a thief, a wife, a mother, a girlfriend (as she had a boyfriend on the side for years), but she saved her family from poverty in perhaps the only way she knew how to.

From early on Dale knew she had to be strong, and she struggled to be “normal” – “whatever normal is/was”.  The key is to turn your flaws into flowers.

Changing the Face of Education

If you are a parent, then you know just how hard school can be on our kids.  Wait!  What am I saying?  If you go up almost every day for years and went to school, then you should know what I am talking about.  Isn’t it time we began changing the face of education and made it a deeply positive experience for all students!

School and education brings a lot of good things, but the culture (and environment) of most schools will subject you to potential bullying, pressure from teachers, loneliness, depression, etc.  I reiterate that school can be a blast and lots of great things can happen. However, if the bad outweigh the good, it becomes exceptionally difficult for some to handle it.  Many kids turn to ways to cope that are not beneficial, and for some they eventually walk away from education – drop out and never further their learning.  Of course, some who drop out of public (or even private) school may very well continue in a different way.  But, what about those who don’t?

Dr. Clete Bulach interviewed teachers and students from every school district in West Virginia.  His book, Creating a Culture for High Performing Schools: A Comprehensive Approach to School Reform and Dropout Prevention, focuses on a number of things including the 5 basic needs: 1) Survival 2) Desiring happiness 3) Having control 4) Purpose 5) Caring.

Twisted – View Horror Stories in a Whole New Light

Do you like horror stories?  I, Janelle, admit I like suspense, but I have never been a big fan of horror or scary stories.  However, when we sat down with Michaelbrent Collings he certainly twisted my view 😉  In fact, he helped me view horror stories in a whole new light.  I am not saying I am going to run out (or jump on my Kindle) and start filling my library with horror, but I will no longer simply turn away from it just because of the genre.

I guess I feel a bit embarrassed that I had shunned horror for the most part until this conversation.  Now the psychologist in me is fired up and I want to not only talk to more horror writers, but I want to read more of their work.  Of course, this doesn’t outweigh my favorite genres, but I can’t express enough how this one author shifted my perspective.

If you like horror, you will LOVE Michaelbrent.  If you don’t like horror, then I still tell you that you will LOVE Michaelbrent and this interview.

This is a MUST listen to show today!

The concept for this book came from a sermon she gave in Indiana a few years back.  Tabitha is passionate about helping women have different strategies to guard their hearts and live joyful lives.

We asked Kayla what tips she might share with other newer authors.  She laughed at one point asked if she could share that caffeine keeps her going…coffee..tea…  Zing!  A piece of advice that she shared that we found to be huge is to commit to writing every evening even if what you write doesn’t end up in your book.  The point is to keep the creative juices flowing.  Therefore, even if you write a daily blog post, you are writing are you not? Yep – writing and keeping the channel open.

Often you hear people tell you to never give up, but Kayla is a wonderful example of that.  She shared with us that it actually took her around 10 years to get this first story in writing and released.  Does it have to take 10 years?  No.  But, if it does, so what?  Never give up your dream!

On a last note, she shared that some of her favorite resources are Google and Facebook. Nowadays, some might think those are obvious resources, but many people would not think of them.  So, we really loved that Kayla shared the importance of these excellent tools and resources.  Her other favorite tool is Open Office. 🙂

So, grab a cup of joe, get a pen and paper, jump online and get busy!  There is no better time to start than right now.  Well….after you listen to our interview with Kayla!

Kayla Larson has been writing most of her life. A bookworm at a young age, she grew into the art and passion of storytelling, starting with short stories and later creating novels and writing fanfiction. All of these old tales of which can be found in hundreds of notebooks stashed away in many boxes. She has written poetry, skits, and newspaper articles. She takes inspiration for a number of authors and holds dear her autographed photo of her favorite – Dean Koontz. She enjoys fantasy, science fiction, westerns, mysteries…anything that can whisk her away to another world.

Making some more coffee,

Janelle + Rob
