Ray Hamill

In Help, My Horse is Drowning!, Ray Hamill explores the unique relationship between sports and their overzealous fans—himself included. Through personal stories of his own, colorful facts and history, and some satirical portraits of sports fans, Hamill delves into what exactly it is that makes people go nuts over sports.

There are some areas within Help, My Horse is Drowning! that seem a bit disorganized or jumbled; many times, Ray Hamill seems to get sidetracked with long-winded stories before returning to his original point. It’s still quite entertaining to read, but might benefit from some more diligent organization. Also, perhaps it should be noted that readers who are not already sports fans may occasionally find themselves having no idea what or whom Hamill is referring to in his tales. It’s not devastating to the book by any means, since it carries itself quite well regardless, but that’s just something to be aware of.

Regardless of whether readers are sports fans or not, though, Help, My Horse is Drowning! is undeniably a hilariously entertaining read. Ray Hamill writes in a casual, infectiously funny style that immediately captivates from the first page and actively keeps the reader engaged right on through to the end. Equally thoughtful and down-to-earth, Help, My Horse is Drowning! is a unique, memoir-style book that is sure to leave a memorable impression on its readers. At the very least, readers will finish Help, My Horse is Drowning! and find themselves still chuckling aloud at the thought of a flying NASCAR race or the image of Ray Hamill “splashiming.”

[Author Interview] Anthony Custode Jr. | Vanity’s Price Tag

Featured Authors Talk About It

Author Interview

Anthony Custode Jr.

ATAI: Tell us a little about you.

Anthony Custode Jr: I’m a graduate of Buffalo State College, where I received my bachelor’s in journalism. I’ve covered sports and soft feature stories for local newspapers, and now I decided to venture off into the world of fictional writing. I also have a son, who is 11 and really keeps me on my toes.

ATAI: How long have you been writing?

Anthony Custode Jr: I’ve been writing my entire life, really. I remember in grade school, one of my teachers called my writing “a riot” and it drove me crazy because I wasn’t sure if she meant it as a compliment or not. Years later, I’m still considering it a complement.

ATAI: What was your most recent release?

Anthony Custode Jr: My most recent release is titled, Vanity’s Price Tag, which is a realistic story about moral vision. The main character finds his girlfriend cheating on him, and decides to do something about his body image. Unfortunately, he becomes obsessed with his appearance, which leads him down a road of bad decisions. I wanted to write this book because I personally have had weight issues, so I can relate the main character in a sense. Jackson, the main character, is faced with a choice to make about HGH, and eventually gives in to the temptation and I really wanted to point out the dangers of using supplements like that because it’s far more common than people may realize.

ATAI: What do you love most about writing?

Anthony Custode Jr: I really love just building a story. If I get gripped into the story while writing it, I feel like I can grip the reader as well. I also love the freedom to convey the message in any manner that I want. It’s not like journalism, where you have to be aware of your audience and have to worry about what the general public may find offensive. My books so far have some language to them that some may find offensive, but to me, that’s OK. I like writing on the edge and I kind of enjoy the “shock” factor with certain words or situations.

ATAI: What do you find most challenging?

Anthony Custode Jr: Time, to me is the biggest challenge. I have an 11-year-old son who takes up a lot of my time. I coach his hockey team and I’m very involved in everything that he has going on, so finding time between work and home to write something substantial is difficult.

ATAI: Where do your ideas come from?

Anthony Custode Jr: My ideas come from anywhere, really. Vanity’s Price Tag was inspired by a generic personal experience of weight loss and people watching at the gym, which I was able to mold a fictional story around. I think anyone can relate to it because it really focusses on a person’s insecurities, which we all have. Andrew’s Journal, which is my first book, was really just free-writing that was indirectly inspired by a book I read in high school titled Chinese Handcuffs.

ATAI: What is your writing process?

Anthony Custode Jr: Well, that’s an interesting question because when I wrote Andrew’s Journal, I really didn’t have a process. I was really just trying to get something I could be proud of on paper and get it published. But, after doing that, I found a process that really worked for me with Vanity’s Price Tag. I like to know the ending of the book, very specifically. With Vanity’s Price Tag, I had a series of events that I wanted to make sure that I covered in chronological order. So really just mapping out the story in my head and hitting certain checkpoints, I guess you could call them, on the way to the destination. I like to develop characters loosely in my head as well, but I won’t stick to that strictly if the story dictates otherwise. I try to keep an open mind and let the story kind of flow on its own.

ATAI: Do your characters (or message) ever seem to have a life of their own or an agenda of their own?

Anthony Custode Jr: My characters always take a life of their own. Sometimes, they are based on actual people, or a mix of people. Other times they are based off of characteristics that I try to form a character off of. But as I said prior, I try not to stick to a specific parameter for a character. I think that would be narrow-minded and would hurt the overall development of the character. Just as I like to let the story flow on its own, I do the same with the characters. I think it allows a certain unpredictability to the characters because now they’re becoming real people in a sense.

ATAI: What’s your favorite part of your book (or one of your books)?

Anthony Custode Jr: I would have to say the suspense portion of both Andrew’s Journal and Vanity’s Price Tag. I had a friend tell me that when she was reading Andrew’s Journal, that she felt like she didn’t breathe a single breath while reading the final few chapters. That to me was one of the biggest compliments I could get. Just knowing someone was so dialed into something I’ve written like that is so gratifying. When I’m writing the story, and I’m building the suspense to something, I often wonder if the suspense is real for the reader, because I know where I’m going with it, so there’s no true shock value for me as a writer. But if I can put that shock and suspense in the mind of the reader, there’s really no better feeling.

ATAI: What are you working on next?

Anthony Custode Jr: Well, I released Andrew’s Journal in February and Vanity’s Price Tag in June, so I’ve been pretty busy. I’d like to market these two for a bit before I really decide my next work. But, I will say that I have it narrowed down between a thriller about domestic violence, or a comedy that revolves around a call center. I’m sure I’ll end up publishing both eventually though, because once I get an idea I can’t help but expand upon it.

ATAI: Where can people find you online?

Anthony Custode Jr: I’m on Twitter as @Uncensored_ant and Facebook as Anthony Custode Jr. I also just launched a website, anthonycustodejr.wordpress.com. I will say that I’m still trying to find my presence on social media and I don’t particularly care for Twitter. But, by all means, if anyone feels the need or want to Tweet me, go for it! I will certainly respond.

ATAI: Thank you for sharing with us and our audience.

Anthony Custode Jr: I really do appreciate you giving me this opportunity to talk about my book and I hope that if anyone in the audience does check out one or both of my books, that they at least take something positive from them. Also, I just want to say to anyone accessing this interview that you are in control of your own life, so if there is something that you want to do, find a way, and do it. Thank you so much for your time!

Barnstorming America – Entered in 2017 ATAI Book Award Contest

John A. Molina

Barnstorming America by John A. Molina is a non-fiction book that retells the history of women’s basketball in America and provides profiles on some of the women who pushed the sport into the public eye. Not only does this book act as a quintessential reference book but history and sports fans alike will enjoy reading this well researched and visually engaging book.

Barnstorming America is a passion project for Molina, and his genuine interest and love for his subject matter is felt on every page. The inclusion of photographs and well-documented evidence make this book a great coffee table book that is still well-researched and easy to read. Barnstorming is well written, and readers will enjoy looking at all the photos and visual evidence that Molina integrates into the text. What makes Barnstorming America such a success, is its ability to weave the sport’s history with that of female empowerment. Above all, this book highlights the achievements of great women that many of us will know little about.

However, the one stylistic problem with the book is the in-depth focus on individual players. While this may be great as a reference for readers who are highly invested in the topic, it does not read as cleanly as the preceding chapters that are divided into themes. These profiles are interesting but easily glossed over, which is a pity as they have something to offer the narrative.

Overall, Barnstorming America is an interesting book that showcases a history that seems to be forgotten. Molina’s genuine passion and historical tie with females’ basketball makes this read interesting for both avid sports fans, history buffs and should be a staple in every library around the country.

Agile Scrum: Your Quick Start Guide – Entered in 2017 ATAI Book Award Contest

Scott M. Graffius

Agile Scrum: Your Quick Start Guide with Step-by-Step Instructions is a manual written by Scott M. Graffius for business owners looking to improve their management and development. It details how to use the Agile Scrum method to plan, execute, and track the development of a business’s products. Each step in the cycle is broken down, point by point, so that business owners can quickly learn how to efficiently use this method to further enhance their business’s production model.

Agile Scrum is straightforward and to the point; it gets straight down to business from the very first page. While its information is useful and certainly helpful to owners of any sort of business, it’s a bit dry. There’s no doubt about it; this is a textbook, and not a particularly exciting one, either. Perhaps, interjecting some humor or real-life examples would serve it well. It’s short and sweet and gets the job done, but it lacks a certain flavor that would make it memorable. Instead, Agile Scrum is the sort of study guide that business owners might need to keep going back to, which isn’t necessarily something negative.

However, Agile Scrum certainly has everything it needs to be an essential handbook for any business owner. Scott M. Graffius included lots of helpful, colorful infographics to supplement his text, which makes the content easier to understand. Each point is broken down into easy-to-follow bullet points, so that even the most inexperienced business owners will have no trouble learning the method. Agile Scrum: Your Quick Start Guide with Step-by-Step Instructions is a no-nonsense, concise manual that will surely help any sort of business owner improve their business with the Agile Scrum production cycle.

After the Scrum – Entered in the Romance Novel Contest

Dahlia Donovan

In Dahlia Donovan’s After the Scrum, Caddock Stanford is a newly retired rugby star, forced out of the game due to an unfortunate injury. After his brother’s untimely death, he assumes custody of his four-year-old nephew, Devlin, and moves to the quaint village of Looe in Cornwall, England. Once there, he purchases an old pub and enlists the help of eccentric interior decorator Francis Keen to help him restore it. They both soon find more than they bargained for, however, as they become increasingly drawn to one another and, against all odds, fall in love.

First of all, it needs to be said how hilariously adorable it is that Dahlia Donovan included a glossary for the British slang words used in the novel. So no worries, guys; if you’re concerned about what in the world a “scrum” is, there’s a handy little glossary for that (spoiler alert: it’s a rugby play).

With that being said, After the Scrum was a surprisingly well-rounded romance novel. Obviously, the steamy romance was present; however, it didn’t feel unnatural or rushed, like in most romance novels. The characters were likeable and fairly complex, and the humor was abundant and well done. The storyline as a whole was charming and laid back; despite a few darker undertones in the characters’ pasts, their story together felt very lighthearted and sweet. There are few, if any, faults to find in this book. Dahlia Donovan crafted a lovely, overwhelmingly believable romance in After the Scrum that was a true joy to read.

Make Some Room

Make Some Room

Click to get your copy!

Book Description:

In June of 2013, author Angie Mattson Stegall and her then-boyfriend/now-husband Nelson spent sixteen days rafting 225 miles of the Colorado River through Grand Canyon. Having never done a trip like this before, she wasn’t really sure what to expect.

Thankfully, the friends who invited them prepared them well:

1. Take everything you think you will need.

2. Leave everything else behind.

Turns out, everything she needed fit into a bag about the size of a small Golden Retriever.

During their trip, their six rafts held the rest of the gear they would need: kitchen and food, bathroom setup (aka “Groovers”), and assorted emergency gear. The motto of Grand Canyon is “Pack it in; pack it out.” And that means EVERYTHING.

So, it went that they spent sixteen days sleeping under the stars and Milky Way and keeping track of trash and crumbs (called “microtrash”). It was also sixteen days of trying to keep sand out of her contact lenses.

Here’s what she learned during that trip:

• It doesn’t take much to keep sixteen people happy. A filling meal three times a day plus some snacks goes a long way.

• Wearing pretty much the same clothes for days on end isn’t a big deal.

• Taking a bath (in the 49 degrees-cold river) every three or four days makes being clean all the sweeter.

• Nature is all around and she is beautiful. Slowing down and paying attention is like creating the most delicious meditation + prayer milkshake.

• The rapids were big and fast and the water was cold. She was scared shitless more than a few times. There was no option but to keep going. So, she did.

• Laughter, conversation, and connecting with those sixteen people were a crucial part of each day.

• She didn’t think about money on the Canyon. Except for one stop at Phantom Ranch (deep at the bottom of the Canyon) for postcards and lemonade, there was literally no place to even use money. If they “needed” anything, they traded for it. Beer for toilet paper. Beer for ice. Will swim for beer! It turned out beer was quite the bartering tool.

• “Drink more water.” That was the answer for everything from general crankiness to major headaches.

Simplifying your life down to a bag and a boat showed her what was important. The author fell in love with the simplicity and rhythm of each day. The Make Some Room Manifesto In a world where our modern lives tend to be chaotic, noisy, and over-scheduled, making some room can be a real challenge. She found that her time on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon created the space for her to think about her life very differently.

This trip set the stage for her to write the Make Some Room Manifesto, which she’s sharing with you in detail in this book. She champions not only understanding but also moving into ACTION. So, to help you learn how to make some room in your own life, Angie decided to turn this into a “how to” book which focuses on the twenty ideas outlined in her Make Some Room Manifesto.

In simple terms: Angie wants to guide you to make some room. Her wish is that everyone has the opportunity to have a Grand Canyon-like experience at least once in their lives. This book is her way of sharing her personal experience. Her hope is it hits you like a ton of bricks…or a two-by-four upside your head…or that it quietly but relentlessly tickles your subconscious like a gentle feather…something, anything that can wake you up to life and inspire you to begin living your life on purpose. She believes you will benefit from what she has learned and discovered. Your only task is to focus on what resonates with you. Leave the rest behind.

One final note: Each chapter of the book contains stories about her time on the river and then goes “Beyond the Canyon” with ideas, action steps, and even checklists to help you focus on what’s essential for you. Dive in!

Notes:

Angie Mattson Stegall’s Make Some Room is a guide for how to simplify, so you can live a more fulfilling life. After taking a life changing rafting trip through the Grand Canyon, Angie realized how unsatisfied and overwhelmed she had been in her day- to-day life. This trip gave her the chance to evaluate what was truly important and the things that needed to change once her and her husband returned home. She created the “Make Some Room Manifesto”, consisting of 20 lessons she learned on her trip. In her book, these lessons are explained in depth using examples from her trip, descriptions of the way that these apply to real life, and action steps to implement these lessons in your own life.

Overall, this book is remarkably helpful. The set up is simple, the lessons straightforward, and action steps accomplishable. The author does a great job of using statistics and referencing other sources to support her ideas. The overarching theme of mindfully living a simpler life is one that many people are feeling the need for in this day and age. Her useful lessons such as disconnecting from technology to reconnect in relationships or decluttering your home and schedule are not revolutionary, but the straightforward manner she describes these topics makes these goals seem achievable. The only complaint is the use of hashtags in the writing, especially when the author is talking about disconnecting from social media. That said, the action step guide at the end of the book is a great touch, since you can go through all the steps without having to search through the book. Make Some Room is a great, quick read for those who are looking to find a little more meaning and purpose in life.
