Warren Alexander

Warren Alexander’s Cousins’ Club is a satirical portrait of Jewish families in 1950’s New York. Convinced that her family is the least successful – and stupidest – Jewish family in America, the matriarch of the family declares that her next grandchild will be a genius. She devises a pact; the child will be passed from one family member to another so that he can learn all that each person has to teach him. What ensues is a colorful, hilarious adventure with over-the-top characters and a lesson around every corner.

Sometimes, Cousins’ Club tended to get carried away with its humor and slightly neglected conventional storytelling, making it difficult to decipher what is happening in some scenes and who is speaking in others. Also, despite there being a glossary of Yiddish terms at the end of the book, the lack of adequate context clues or reference to said glossary often made it difficult to follow dialogue when those Yiddish phrases came out to play. It is not evident until the end of the book that a glossary exists at all, and it doesn’t do much good at that point since the reader has already had to navigate the book without knowing of the glossary’s existence.

Aside from those slight mishaps, though, Cousins’ Club is a truly phenomenal read. Warren Alexander expertly blends a memoir-style narrative with satirical fiction, masterfully creating a work that is so absurd, it’s almost easier to believe it all rather than brush it off as the satire it is. The dry, sarcastic humor and eccentric, colorful characters are hilarious without trying too hard and often elicit real, out-loud chuckles. Each story, each family member, and each conversation is better than the last, making Cousins’ Club a constant page-turner. Cousin’s Club is an unforgettable literary experience, chock full of humor, creativity, and a family so wonderfully whacky that it’s guaranteed to leave the reader wanting more.

The Tao of Apathy – Entered in 2017 Book Award Contest

Thomas Cannon

The Tao of Apathy, written by Thomas Cannon, is a satirical portrait of the life, career, and trials of a mundane hospital worker. A new hospital administrator at St. Jude’s makes some disastrous changes, causing the employees to form a union to protest these alterations. Meanwhile, there’s a promotion in it for a kitchen worker named Bigger, but only if he turns his back on the union and thwarts their efforts. His friend recommends implementing the titular “Tao of Apathy,” but Bigger isn’t sure whether he can bring himself to actually use it.

For the most part, this was a unique and highly entertaining novel. However, The Tao of Apathy was a bit difficult to follow at times, as the narrative seemed to jump between different characters’ perspectives frequently and without warning. In the beginning, it was difficult to determine who the main characters were, since the first several pages acted solely as a long-winded introduction of many different employees. In terms of development, The Tao of Apathy has room for a bit of improvement.

However, what makes The Tao of Apathy so interesting is that, despite obviously being a satire, there is a certain degree of realism to the characters and situations. Any person who’s ever worked a job that they hated will find something to relate to in this book. Also, although much of the comedy wasn’t exactly subtle (take some of the characters’ names, for example), it never seemed overdone or tedious. Rather, Thomas Cannon’s use of dry humor was a nice touch that lent a unique flavor to the story. Cannon has crafted an intriguing, well-balanced, entirely different novel in The Tao of Apathy.

All You Need is Love – Entered in Romance Novel Contest

Julie Hodgson

Author Julie Hodgson has crafted a very unusual romance novel in All You Need is Love and a Big Handbag.  This humorous story follows the lives of Maggie and Jack.  Having been sort of a nerd in college, Maggie fell in love with the very popular Jack Spalding.  She was able to catch his eye and eventually they married.  However, it wasn’t all sunshine and roses.  Fifteen years into their marriage, it seemed that Jack might be having an affair.  Maggie’s personal investigation led to a lot of twists and turns.  It even introduced her to a shabby pay-by-the-hour hotel and a variety of other experiences that she never knew were or could be a part of her life.

All You Need is Love and a Big Handbag is a fast paced, fantastic story.  Hodgson writes in a way that keeps readers interested, turning pages and on the edge of their seats as they can’t wait to see what happens next.  The characters are downright fascinating.  Maggie’s insecurities are depicted well, but she busts through them as she wants to discover the truth.  The author’s storyline gives a breath of fresh air to the stereotypical romance novels that are on the book store shelves today.  I truly enjoyed it from the very first scene.  Julie Hodgson will have readers laughing out loud at the antics and hilarious situations throughout the book.  For those who enjoy romance novels and would love to read something a little different, I highly recommend reading All You Need is Love and a Big Handbag.

The Dolorous Adventure of Brother Banenose

The Dolorous Adventure of Brother Banenose

Matt Catania

Book Description:

The Dolorous Adventure of Brother Banenose is the ideal novel for mature readers with juvenile senses of humor who enjoy satire, sex, knife fights, theosophy, bestiaries, sorcery, and some history thrown in for good measure.

This tale focuses on the comic misadventures of a 14th century Franciscan monk known as Brother Banenose, who dreams of becoming a saint. Unfortunately, he is afraid of being martyred. Even less fortunate, Brother Banenose inadvertently inspires murderous rages in many people he meets in the outside world, including a family of relentless barbarians.

When he learns that a precious relic has been stolen from his monastery, Brother Banenose sets off to recover it. Along the way he strikes up questionable friendships with some less than pious individuals including a sultry witch, a fraudulent swineherd, a warrior maiden, and a soothsayer who can only foresee doom.

His quest leads him to The Idyllic Land Of Bliss, which happens to be beset by both a menagerie of fantastical monsters and the Black Death. The situation grows even more perilous once the Holy Office of the Inquisition arrives in town.

If you were to put The Decameron, The Name of the Rose, and The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle into a blender and hit frappe, you would wind up with something resembling The Dolorous Adventure of Brother Banenose.

Original paintings by the author are included.

Book Description:

When Olivia gets news of her best friend Dan’s fatal car accident, her life is shattered. Consumed with grief and struggling to find any meaning or purpose to life, she trudges along with a gaping void in her heart. Finally, when her frustration reaches its peak, Olivia decides to put her trust in the depth of friendship the two of them shared. That trust finally allows him to breakthrough to her, and Dan begins to guide Olivia through the twists and turns of her life, leading to something new and entirely unexpected.

When Olivia exposes a gigantic internal scandal at work, her career implodes. With no job and nowhere to turn, she escapes to Palm Springs for the sympathy and care of her beloved cousin, Garrett. However, with only weeks left before the opening of his newest store, “Gin and Tonic,” Garrett isn’t quite the comfort Olivia had expected. She yet again tries to find her way, and in the process meets someone who begins to fill that void in her heart. She’s never before experienced a love like this; it heals her soul and rekindles her spirit – and just may have been the design of her dearly departed friend all along.

Beyond Believing is a sweet, funny, and romantic story that touches the heart, serves up delicious twists and turns, and shows the reader that there’s no such thing as “coincidence.” Author D.D. Marx regards this book as her “love letter to friendship,” written in memory of her best friend, Dan.

The Mastermind behind Beyond Believing:

D.D. Marx

D.D. Marx is an author, blogger and inspired writer for the chick-lit genre. She is a Second City graduate, hopeless romantic, amazingly proud Aunt, a forever friend and life lover.

D.D. Marx came barreling into this world with the “gift of gab”.  Her parents quickly identified a pattern forming when each teacher conference contained the words “she’s a little too social”.  D.D.’s biggest life concern was identifying which boy she’d be chasing at recess rather than mastering math problems. She parlayed this gift into creating play dates on the playground. If friendship were a business, she would be a millionaire. She prides her life on maintaining friends from every walk of life in every corner of the country. This is the fuel that fills her tank.

Graduating with a Communication degree from the University of Dayton, she attempted to break into the world of Public Relations but was instead side-tracked with a J.O.B. At the strong encouragement of her friends and family, who dubbed her a “funny story teller”, she stretched her comfort zone by entering the Second City program in Chicago where her itch for entertainment was finally scratched. Determined to share her story and create a legacy, she decided to combine these talents and become a writer. She returned to her alma-mater to immerse herself in a 3-day writing course where this dream finally came to life. Asked to imagine if she was a super-hero, her task was to dig-deep to describe her special powers. Based on the real-life tragedy of one of her best friends, that answer came without hesitation. All she’s ever wanted was the power to visit with him one last time. This is the inspiration that catapulted her into her debut project titled, the Beyond Series. She dove into a world imagining that he never left.

Book Description:

Ghosts Haunted

From that cheerful puff of smoke known as Casper to the hunkiest potter living or dead, Sam Wheat, there is probably no more iconic entity in supernatural history than the ghost. And these are just recent examples. From the earliest writings such as the Epic of Gilgamesh to today’s ghost-hunting reality TV shows, ghosts have chilled the air of nearly every era and every culture in human history. In this book, Lisa Morton uses her scholarly prowess—more powerful than any proton pack—to wrangle together history’s most enduring ghosts into an entertaining and comprehensive look at what otherwise seems to always evade our eyes.

Tracing the ghost’s constantly shifting contours, Morton asks the most direct question—What exactly is a ghost?—and examines related entities such as poltergeists, wraiths, and revenants. She asks how a ghost is related to a soul, and she outlines all the different kinds of ghosts there are. To do so, she visits the spirits of the classical world, including the five-part Egyptian soul and the first haunted-house, conceived in the Roman playwright Plautus’s comedy, Mostellaria. She confronts us with the frightening phantoms of the Middle Ages—who could incinerate priests and devour children—and reminds us of the nineteenth-century rise of Spiritualism, a religion essentially devoted to ghosts. She visits with the Indian bhuta and goes to the Hungry Ghost Festival in China, and of course she spends time in Mexico, where ghosts have a particularly strong grip on belief and culture. Along the way she gathers the ectoplasmic residues seeping from books and film reels, from the Gothic novel The Castle of Otranto to the 2007 blockbuster Paranormal Activity, from the stories of Ann Radcliffe to those of Stephen King.

Wide-ranging, informative, and slicked with over fifty unearthly images, Ghosts is an entertaining read of a cultural phenomenon that will delight anyone, whether they believe in ghosts or not.
