Michael S. Sorensen

I Hear You: The Surprisingly Simple Skill Behind Extraordinary Relationships by Michael S. Sorensen provides readers with a simple and actionable look at the skills necessary to build and sustain meaningful interpersonal relationships. Sorensen uses the book to explain the concept of validation, and he provides readers with numerous examples of how to employ this skill in their everyday lives.

I Hear You: The Surprisingly Simple Skill Behind Extraordinary Relationships is well structured and formatted the whole way through. The book has an overabundance of examples which provide ways for people to practice validation in their everyday lives, but clustering many of the examples together in “Part III: Putting it All Together” slows the pacing of the final third of the book in a way that is jarring. The commitment to providing a vast selection of examples for the reader to study and learn from is admirable. However, given the number of examples that are worked into the book’s first two sections, eliminating some of the final examples may aid in diminishing the pacing issue.

Sorensen has done a wonderful job of presenting the topic in a way that is approachable. The reader never once feels like they are being talked down to. The choice to make it clear in the introduction that Sorensen himself is not an academic expert on the topic, but rather a person with a personal interest in the subject, assists with the overall approachable tone of the piece. He includes enough citations from reputable, respected minds in the field to show that he has really done his research. The book is also not overly long, something Sorensen himself insisted on, which helps to keep the pace moving. I Hear You: The Surprisingly Simple Skill Behind Extraordinary Relationships by Michael S. Sorensen is an excellent choice for readers looking for a friendly and approachable look at interpersonal communications.

Living in Italy: The Real Deal – Entered in 2017 ATAI Book Award Contest

Click here to get your copy!

Stef Smulders

In Living in Italy: The Real Deal – How to Survive the Good Life, Stef Smulders details how he, his partner, Nico, and their dog left their lives behind to start a new life in Italy. Once there, they aspired to start their own bed and breakfast, Villa I Due Padroni. However, as Dutchmen, Stef and Nico were completely out of their comfort zone in the eccentric Italian landscape. Thrust into the midst of a difficult restoration project and a sea of quirky characters, Stef and Nico struggled to find their way. They needed to discover, as the title suggests, “how to survive the good life.”

At first glance, Living in Italy seems to be a sort of travel guide or emigrant’s handbook. However, it is nothing of the sort. In fact, it is primarily a memoir about two immigrants and their hilarious escapades in Italy. Although there are bits of advice sprinkled throughout, there is not nearly enough to fully commit to the genre it appears to be. Aside from its misleading first impression, Living in Italy has a few other quirks, as well. It’s poorly organized in some areas, jumping around a lot in focus and setting. Some chapters seemed entirely disjointed because of this. Other times, there seems to be errors in the translation of the book; abundant grammatical errors and untranslated Italian phrases can lead to a fair bit of confusion for readers. Much Stef Smulder’s writing was quite abrupt, too; chapters seemed to end as soon as they started and the storytelling was not as strong as it could have been.

Despite its lack of organization and clarity, Living in Italy was certainly an interesting read. The characters that Stef and Nico encounter during their exploits are humorous and entertaining, as are their stories about acclimating to Italian culture. Also, for fans of home renovations and DIY projects, this book has plenty to interest you. Living in Italy: The Real Deal – How to Live the Good Life could use a bit of renovation itself, but is still a fascinating read for anyone considering moving to Italy and starting anew, as Stef and Nico did.

Return to the Chapel of Eternal Love

Click to get your copy!

Book Description:

Five years have passed since we spent a day with Rosemary, manager of the Chapel of Eternal Love in the heart of Las Vegas. Is the wedding chapel still the love of her life? Does Buster, her faithful dachshund, still have his nose for matrimony? And, in the interim, what has happened to all the couples who ventured into the chapel that day? On which path did Mattie and Garth’s Harley- Davidsons take them after they rode off that morning? Did the anti-war activist bride find peace with her Iraqi veteran husband? Was the spouse in the May-December marriage able to put his gigolo past behind him? Could the mixed-faith couple convince their families of their true love for each other? Did the two lost souls find real happiness at last? Discover the journeys of these and all the other couples, and learn the compelling reason beckoning them all to Return to the Chapel of Eternal Love.

Notes: Janelle’s Review

Stephen Murray has written another heart-warmingly, gentle romance that is like nothing else out there. Return to the Chapel of Eternal Love is the sequel to Murray’s 5 star rated, The Chapel of Eternal Love. Having read the first book of unique fictional wedding stories, I was very excited to read the sequel. There are numerous couples and individuals whose stories range from a former owner of an escort service to a family in witness protection to a congresswoman and her husband. Of course, Buster, the intuitive little dachshund from the first book, is back and his story continues as well. Just as in The Chapel of Eternal Love, there are joys and sorrows, laughter and tears. Murray elegantly takes readers on a journey of discovery right along side the characters. In Return to the Chapel of Eternal Love, the characters take a quick, yet powerful, trip down memory lane when the current pastor, Father Mark Roads, contacts them out of the blue. There’s a compelling reason that calls them to return to the chapel.

Return to the Chapel of Eternal Love is so unique and beautiful that I couldn’t put it down. Before I knew it, I’d stayed up and read the entire book. Stephen Murray is very talented when it comes to getting readers to truly feel the characters in the space of individual chapters. Even with so many characters involved throughout The Chapel of Eternal Love and Return to the Chapel of Eternal Love, they are all well developed. That in of itself is almost impossible to do in such a short time span, but Murray just has a knack for expressing them so clearly. Can you pick up Return to the Chapel of Eternal Love and read it as a stand alone? Sure, but I highly recommend you read the first as well because they are both so truly enjoyable. Stephen Murray has hit a home run with these two. The Chapel of Eternal Love and Return to the Chapel of Eternal Love are sweet, romantic, charming and downright classy. Well done!

****

Liz’s review of The Chapel of Eternal Love

I have fallen in love with Stephen Murray’s book, The Chapel of Eternal Love. This amazing little book is filled with fascinating love stories of couples. They range from a couple of Harley riders who unexpectedly fall in love to a lady of the night to two sets of twins to a couple from vastly different religious backgrounds. Rosemary, who runs the chapel, is interwoven throughout each of the stories. Furthermore, Buster, Rosemary’s sweet little dachshund, is always at the chapel. He has a nose for simply knowing whether or not a couple is going to make it or not. There is even a hint at romance for Rosemary. With so many stories, you just have to keep turning pages – you want to know who will show up at the chapel next.

Extremely well written, The Chapel of Eternal Love is really, really good from page one. I am blown away and very impressed by how easily Stephen Murray gets you to understand the characters almost instantly. With each couple’s story only lasting for that chapter, I was shocked at how much information and depth Murray was able to give to each character and Buster. Love, love, love Buster – what a fun piece to add to the overall ambiance of the chapel. Ultimately, The Chapel of Eternal Love is like a peek into a day-in-the-life of Rosemary and her little dachshund, Buster. Yet, Murray has a way with words and style of writing that opens your heart to each character and their love stories. He makes it easy to fall in love with not only the chapel and Buster, but with each and every person chapter after chapter. I can hardly wait to read the sequel, Return to The Chapel of Eternal Love. If I could give The Chapel of Eternal Love six stars, I would!

27 (Wrong) Reasons You’re Single

Sara Eckley

Click here to get your copy!

Book Description:

If you’re single and searching, there’s no end to other people’s explanations, excuses, and criticism explaining why you haven’t found a partner:

“You’re too picky. Just find a good-enough guy and you’ll be fine.”
“You’re too desperate. If men think you need them, they’ll run scared.”
“You’re too independent. Smart, ambitious women always have a harder time finding mates.”
“You have low self-esteem. You can’t love someone else until you’ve learned to love yourself.”
“You’re too needy. You can’t be happy in a relationship until you’ve learned to be happy on your own.”

Based on one of the most popular Modern Love columns of the last decade, Sara Eckel’s It’s Not You challenges these myths, encouraging singletons to stop picking apart their personalities and to start tapping into their own wisdom about who and what is right for them. Supported by the latest psychological and sociological research, as well as interviews with people who have experienced longtime singledom, Eckel creates a strong and empowering argument to understand and accept that there’s no one reason why you’re single—you just are.

Top 10 Author Interviews for 2015

We decided to share our top 10 author interviews for 2015.  It was exceptionally challenging to choose only 10 as we interview hundreds of authors and dearly LOVED so many of them.

This is not about the top 10 books, but rather the authors themselves and their interviews. Every single one of these interviews are ones you should put on your “must hear” list…and perhaps, you’ll put their books on your “must read” list 🙂

We’ve opted to share these on the show as well as here in the shownotes in order of interview date versus in order of our favorites.

When it comes to getting Damon away from those who kidnapped him, there’s nothing Serena won’t do. Even if she has to kill him to save him. First, though, she must prove to her father that she has what it takes to be a soldier against the insidious threat of the Institute. Her first mission has to be perfect.

But with inaccurate intelligence, unexpected storms, and Gav Belias, people’s hero of the Watch, on the prowl, will she even survive? If she doesn’t succeed, they’ll never let her go after her brother.

And that would be unthinkable, when it was her fault that he was taken in the first place.

Slam is Tash McAdam’s first work with Glass House Press, and serves as a prequel to her series The Psionics, with the first book, Maelstrom, due in 2015.

Designer Relationships

Book Description:

Contemporary relationships are in a state of rapid evolution. These changes can and should empower people with the opportunity to develop partnerships based on their own sexualities, understandings, and agreements. This makes it possible to create what Kenneth Haslam, founder of the Kinsey Institute’s Polyamory Archive, has called “designer relationships.”

Designer relationships may encompass: people who bond emotionally but not sexually; people who agree to be non-exclusive; single people who have occasional lovers or friends with benefits; multiple partner configurations where long-term bonds exist among all or some; partnerships in which people are kinky and that make room to explore kink.

The possibilities are limitless, and thinking about a partnership as something people can craft allows for flexibility and change. Relationships can open and close or have varying degrees and kinds of openness as circumstances demand. In the context of a designer relationship, decisions are made mutually, consciously, and deliberately. Best-selling authors and nationally known relationship experts Patricia Johnson and Mark A. Michaels are exemplars of this life choice, and have studied polyamory for over 20 years. This book explains exactly how you and your loved ones can design your own life and love.

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000037_00036]

Book Description:

Three years ago, Jack was a brilliant young detective with the LAPD. Now he plays poker to make ends meet, and to forget the horrific event that ended his police career. Out of the blue Jack gets a call from his father Joseph Pearl, a distinguished Harvard professor who is in Los Angeles for a philosophy conference. The two haven’t spoken in years yet Pearl seems anxious to discuss some matter in person, behavior strangely out of character for the emotionally-distant dad who Jack still blames for the family tragedy that tore them apart. But when the philosopher fails to show up and can’t be found, Jack knows something is wrong and feels compelled to find him.

As his shaky detective instincts kick in, Jack tracks down a beautiful yet troubled Yale grad student named Claire who was having a clandestine affair with Pearl. Together they search for the man they both have issues with and uncover secrets and lies in the world of philosophy, including a trail of murder and no shortage of colleagues who wanted Pearl dead. The more Jack risks his life for answers, the more he fights old demons and his growing attraction to Claire. Then just as he learns the shocking truth behind his father’s disappearance, Jack finds himself drawn back into the haunting, unsolved case that got him kicked off the force.

Impossible to put down, THE NAKED PHILOSOPHER is a gut-wrenching, heart-stopping crime thriller about family and revenge that keeps the reader guessing to the very last page.
