Paul DeBlassie III

Goddess of the Wild Thing by Paul DeBlassie III follows a woman named Eve on her quest to find love amidst life, loss, and a metaphysical war between two magical deities. Set in the mystical nation of Aztlan del Sur, Eve finds herself torn between the affections of Sam, a man she doesn’t fully trust, and spending her life entirely without love. Goddess of the Wild Thing is an ambitious novel which attempts to answer the question: is bad love preferable to no love at all?

Goddess of the Wild Thing attempts to do a lot in a short amount of time. It occasionally struggles under the weight of all the worldbuilding necessary to establish the world of Aztlan del Sur, and unfortunately sometimes it falls short. Better attention could be paid to establishing the mythology behind the various deities and why it is that they are so diametrically opposed. This would help to better ground the story in the world in which it is set. Further developing the cast of supporting characters would provide the story with more life and make the buildup to the final battle more satisfying.

Where Goddess of the Wild Thing excels is in its ambition. This novel tries to do so much! From the blending of Mesoamerican and Native American cultures to the conversation about toxic behaviors, both masculine and feminine, in human relationships, there is a lot going on. DeBlassie seamlessly integrates his knowledge of psychology to present the reader with a main character that has a fully developed and nuanced psyche. Situating Aztlan del Sur in the Southwestern United States is a smart move. Clearly grounding the story in a real location, even though Aztlan del Sur differs from modern day America, adds to the magical realism that is inherent in the story. Goddess of the Wild Thing by Paul DeBlassie III offers an intriguing look at a fantasy world while encouraging the reader to confront their own ideas about love, relationships, and spirituality.

R.J. Castille

Goddess by R.J. Castille is an erotic BDSM novel about Leila and her introduction to, mastery of, and adventures in the lifestyle. While she seems dull and submissive during the day, her life away from the office, as a domme named “Goddess,” commands respects and dedication from her submissive. However, she is put to the test when her strong-willed boss, Gordon Roth, enters her secretive world.

Castille’s writing style is simple yet descriptive. She manages to set up scenes, especially those in the Red Velvet room (a BDSM club), while still leaving space for the reader’s imagination. The story of Leila is more than BDSM; it explores the duality of people and how power plays exist in everyday life. That is not to suggest that the sex scenes are not hot and readers interested in the lifestyle will be met with familiar tropes and BDSM relationships.

The one problem with Goddess is that at times it can read like a “How to “guide on BDSM. While this will give curious first-time readers a chance to better understand BDSM, it could be better woven into the narrative without being so explicit. This not so much a weakness as it is a distraction from the plot.

Overall, Goddess is a novel that is steeped in the BDSM aesthetic. Through the character of Leila, readers are plunged into a world of lust, rich relationships, and tests of wills.  The plot is strong and, coupled with well-written sex scenes, makes a story worth lusting over.

Godless: Living a Valuable Life Beyond Beliefs

Can you live Godless?  Whether or not you believe in God or Gods or Goddesses or some higher power it is tough to live “godless” simply because so many believe their way is the only way.  As Jeff Rasley says, “Beliefs divide us.”  He also makes a very valid point though – “Values unite us.”

His book, Godless: Living a Valuable Life Beyond Beliefs, makes the case that “religious ideologies have outlived their use”.  He shared during our conversation that he believes that most people can connect to each other’s values and have the same core values even if their religious or spiritual beliefs are quite different.  According to Jeff, most people do not really believe in the fundamentals of their religion.  In other words, most people are not over-the-top and religious fanatics.  Of course, we all know that many of those radical people DO exist.

So, is it really possible to make a powerful transformation in our world so that people could experience living a valuable life beyond beliefs?  Listen now, read his book and then consider the possibilities.
